Crossing Australia with a 3 Year Old

G’day,

Have you ever wanted to experience a camping holiday in the outback? Do you have young kids and when given the option of spending 2 weeks on the road with them or hacking your head off with a blunt spoon, you immediately choose the later.

Well, come with us as we pack our tent, the esky, our 3 year old daughter Wren and semi-trailer loads of humour and take to the road in our 10 year old Nissan travelling from Cairns through the stony deserts of the interior to South Australia.

We will show you that in 2008, you can still have an amazing self-drive adventure at home with a limited budget and limited time.

Starting in Cairns in tropical north Queensland, we will head south west through the Tablelands (the fruit bowl of Australia) and out via the Savannah Way before we plunge head on into the vast outback via Hughenden and onto Winton. Around day 3 we will arrive in Boulia where we’ll then turn south following the famous Birdsville track and skirting the edge of the Simpson dessert.

Why? To meet Wren’s grandparents and camp with them on a station called Darke Peak in South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula.

A distance of some 3,000km.
